Waste Management - Renewal Agreement/ Contract
I am the Commander of an American Legion Post in Michigan. I received a renewal agreement from Waste Management. Beings that we are a nonprofit veterans organization, it is my responsibility to make sure we are being financially responsible. I like to make sure that as much of our funds as possible, go to supporting veterans and their families.
After receiving the renewal I started contacting different vendors. I also contact Waste Management and was quoted $147.00 a month. (if I were a new customer) We are currently paying $220.00. I did end up finding the same services for $111.00 a month, with additional bonus pick-ups throughout the year. So of course I went with them.
I contacted Waste Management to cancel the renewal and was told by the accounts manager that the contract was automatically renewed for 36 months and now goes through Feb of 2018! I was also told that I should have looked at the contract before contacting them. (The representative was a ***!) I explained that the volunteer turn over is every year and we don't know when the contract was entered into or what it entailed and did not have a copy. I let him know as a consumer we should have been informed before an automatic contract goes into effect. I also told him about the renewal agreement I got in the mail and that we did not want to enter into that agreement.
Our discussion got a little heated and he told me if I wanted to cancel, I would have to pay $866 before they would come and pick up the receptacle. With what they have been overcharging us for I don't know how long, I believe we should be paid in full. They should be ashamed of themselves for taking advantage of a non profit, volunteer ran organization like this. These types of contracts should be illegal! Why am I getting a renewal agreement if there is nothing I can do about the contract. Shouldn't I have received the renewal 90 days prior to the contract ending? (Which I was told was not their responsibility.)

I would suggest you file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission and the State Attorney General's Office.
Waste management is a total joke. They are doing the same thing in Arizona.
I sent an email to wmcareonline yesterday and received the same information. I hope Michigan passes a law soon to stop companies from taking advantage of situations! I would really think twice before doing business with them.
